Affiliation: Gotei 13

Description:
Talis is a bit of an oddity compared to most, if not to all of the Shinigami ranks in the fact that he is much younger than most, taking on the appearance of a 17 year old boy. He stands at a height of 5'10" tall and weighs no more than 160 lbs. His body is slender, lithe and well toned with skin kissed by the sun, rough like a well tanned leather hide and littered with the scars of hard living and hard fought battle. Three of these scars stand out more prominently than the rest though, the first runs horizontally across his abdomen, the second begins at the bottom of the right side of his rib cage and extends slightly diagonal down to his left hip, overlapping the first scar while the third stretches from his left shoulder all the way down to his upper right thigh and overlaps the other two. All the more disturbing to most since this is all visible on one as young as Talis.
Red spiked hair sweeps up and back on his head as if it were avoiding Talis' fierce golden iris'd eyes and the scar that runs from his upper left scalp line, running diagonally across his left eye brow, over the bridge of his nose and curving down to end at the right corner of his mouth. All of his features tell a tale of a hard life but also hint at strength unmatched in anyone near his age.
Talis now wears the standard shinigami uniform however he took it upon himself to modify it to his liking. The sleeves have been torn off at the shoulders, exposing the full lengh of his arms to the outside world. Similar tearing was also done to the upper portion that runs around his neck and over the chest and exposes his upper body a bit more, though it is common to see him with the upper portion of the uniform hanging over his midsection, exposing his upper body entirely. He also has replaced the standard Waraji footwear with black leather boots. The rest of the uniform is standard.
Faceclaim: K Project- Mikoto Suoh
Personality:
Talis is, for all intents and purposes, a teenager. A teenager that has a knack for violence and combat which is... understandable considering he was ripped from his mother's womb during combat. He feels that fighting is fun and enjoyable to him. As such, he has a streak of blood lust within his psyche that drives him to fight and to willingly undergo brutal training regiments and fighting style developing that only toughen his body and strengthens his spirit, training regiments that would break most others. For someone of his age, his spirit is unbreakable and unyielding. To him it's not about honor... it's more akin to a child playing with toys. It's the same feeling to him when he finds himself in battle. He also feels the full spectrum of emotion as well but he uses these feelings to fuel his drive even further instead of letting them break him.
When he is not fighting or training, Talis feel's a bit... restless. This causes him to be a bit of an insomniac, being unable to sleep during the night is common for him. To him getting 16 hours of sleep in a week is the norm... sometimes a bit more... sometimes less. It is night though that tends to bring out a more relaxed, somewhat gentler side of him. Laying on the cold ground while staring up at a night sky full of stars is eerily calming to him and can usually be found, if not in the training area or looking for a fight, laying atop a building or a fence staring up into the sky.
Discipline can be a bit of a problem for Talis though, which was evident during his rather short stint in the Academy. He views those that are weak and in a seat of authority unworthy of dictating the actions of others and will not follow an order given from such people unless that order directs him into combat or makes complete sense to him. He also views the use of Kido as a weakling's way of fighting, often degrading and verbally abusing others for using it. To him, if your body and spirit aren't strong enough to defeat your opponent and you have to rely on "coward's magic," then you have no business being in the fight. He also thinks the same about shikai and bankai transformations but wont complain about those... he also views them as a useful, albeit cowardly tool when his opponent enters either stage, a tool that makes his opponent stronger, hence giving Talis more of a challenge. Talis himself cannot use either himself though, being unable to hear his zanpaktou from a wound he sustained just before his birth has given him what he calls "Spirit Deafness"... the inability to hear his zanpaktou. His own strength though more than makes up for this inability.

Talis' zanpaktou is a tachi style katana 48" long with a 36" long blade. It's grip is black in color with a unique gold colored leather wrapping which leads to a golden guard and collar. The blade itself is also unique, featuring two distinctly different styles of blades. The outer blade is a jagged, sharp edge that can cause more pain than normal blades. The inner curve of the blade features an edge with small, serrated teeth, perfect for catching, pulling, tearing and rending of flesh. The blade also features a deep blood grove that runs up it's entirety. This zanpaktou was designed for causing as much physical damage and pain as possible. The zanpaktou can be seen slung at his left side. The most notable features of this zanpaktou is it's blade's deep curve, it's blade's width and thickness, being half that of a normal zanpaktou's and it's massive weight. Only Talis and the zanpaktou's deceased former shinigami wielder are the only two to have been able to wield it as if it were as light as a feather.
Ability
Merciless Strike- Talis may increase the size of his blade and allow it to have a Shikai appearance, which can lengthen the blade all together and make it larger, by releasing off too much reiryoku, causing the blade to momentarily grow to a length of 10 feet and enter a state similar to Shikai. (Like Ichigo had while he lacked control of his reiatsu output) By doing this, he can convert up to 20% of his Reiryoku into the blade and increase his Power by the subtracted amount upon impact. Can be done once every five posts.
Passive Trait
Vicious Blade: The blade of the zanpaktou is designed to inflict more damage than the typical sword. It's jagged edge is capable of cutting and opening wounds deeper than the usual blade while it's serrated edge is capable of rending flesh as well however it's biggest use is the disabling and destruction of joints. With a strike of it's serrated teeth, Talis can firmly implant said teeth into a large enough joint and with a quick yank, tear it apart causing loss of use to the corresponding limb.
Basically, when this sword lands a strike, minor wounds turn into average wounds, average into major and major into fatal.

History:
Author's note: I decided to do something different this time around and tell Talis' history from the perspective of an old woman residing in the Rukongai telling a pair of investigating shinigami the tale of Talis two hundred years into the future."
Prologue...
A pair of shinigami, a man and a woman, had made their way to North Rukongai, walking down it's main dirt road side by side and speaking to each other as the citizens of the district stopped and stared at them warily. Children were huddled into homes by their mothers who followed suit as the rougher looking men looked on in suspicion. It didn't bother the two though, paying them no mind as they continued to make their way to their destination. After making a left onto a side street and walking for another five minutes, they came upon where they were going, an old rundown hut on the outskirts of the district. The woman knocked when the male shinigami spoke. "Hey Ruon... I had heard stories about this one. They say she's some sort of seer." "We're not here for any of that Mayari. We're only here for the inquiry." She knocked on the door again. A gentle, elderly voice from within the hut came in response to the knocking. "It's open!" The two shinigami proceeded to open the door and enter the hut where they saw a short, elderly woman preparing a kettle of tea over an open fire pit. Surrounding the pit were cushions on the floor.
"I've been expecting you! Please, take a seat. Tea?" The little old woman motioned for them to sit on the cushions while she prepared three cups of tea. As the two sat down around the fire, she handed them each a cup, then walked over to an open cabinet door. As she closed it, the female shinigami caught the briefest glimpses of an old captain's haori and a zanpaktou, though she couldn't be sure if that's what she actually saw. The old woman came back and sat down across the fire pit from the two. "Ma'am, this is Mayari, 3rd seat of the 3rd division. I'm Ruon, lieutenant of the 6th division. We're here too-" "Talk about Talis?" The old woman cut Ruon's official sounding statement short. The two shinigami looked at each other with surprise. "How do I know, you are asking yourselves...hehe. I suppose your superiors didn't tell you who I am." Ruon and Mayari looked back at the old lady. "Former 7th division captain Misu Aganita... retired." The two shinigami were shocked to hear of this revelation as the old lady continued. "Been retired now for... oh golly... a thousand years maybe? Oh my poor memory... slips from ya when you're my age! Heehee!" She chuckled a bit. "The kids around here call me Gammy so you may as well." A bright, warm smile flashed over her face. "I reside here now... living out the rest of my days in peace. The children like to come here and listen to stories around this fire. As you are now. And before you do, please dont refer to me as captain or anything of the sort. Relax and enjoy your tea."
Mayari spoke up. "Ok... Ms. Aganita. As you may have heard, Captain Talis is on trial for treason. We cannot share specifics with you but we're here to ask about anything you know about him. It could help to exonerate him." The old woman looked at them with that same warm smile. "Yes, I know. I hope you have time because it's quite a long tale..."

A human life taken too soon...
"I'll start from the beginning... Talis was born back in the human year of the human year 1945 in Berlin, Germany. His parents had given him up to what the human's called an Adoption Agency... a place where children were housed together and paraded before adults like some sort of... child market. No one ever took him in though... his life was spent growing up in this agency building with many other kids, getting into fights and generally being a trouble maker. He did discover early on though that he enjoyed acrobatics... he loved jumping, climbing and swinging himself around things as a young kid. Something as innocent as being an acrobatic though... he turned it into something the other kids and even a few adults were scared of... he turned it into a weapon, using it to beat the snot out of others his age."
Mayari and Ruon were wondering how the hell she could know so much of Talis' human life. The old woman simply smirked a bit before she sipped on her tea and continued telling the story.
"When he was 14 years old he was booted out of the adoption agency where he lived on the streets, making friends with true street scum. From then on Talis lived a life of crime, joining a gang, thievery and fighting others for what he wanted. He forwent notions of a family and of love, believing instead that his own well being was his responsibility. He was 17 when he was killed, shot in the head by one such scumbag over something that the human's call a drug. Fortunately for him though a shinigami in the area found him and performed a Konsō on him. Then he was born into this world."

Birth of the Battle Born...
As Mayari and Ruon continued to sip on their tea, the old lady Misu continued on with her story. "His troubles didn't end in his death... in fact he was almost killed before he was even reborn. You see back then, North Rukongai's 80th district seemed to see slightly more hollow activity than any other area. This only compounded the problems posed by the crime in the district. One such incident happened to a dear friend of mine... Talis' mother, Aya. It was only days before she was supposed to give birth that she was killed... mortally wounded by the piercing tail of a hollow, twice through the chest and once through her abdoman, cutting through the womb and nicking the baby Talis' left cheek. She fell to the ground, bleeding out from her wounds when an 11th division shinigami came and fought the beast."
Tears had welled up in the old woman's eyes as she looked out of her window while she reflected on her friend's death. "I was too late... by the time I had gotten there... both the hollow and the shinigami were dead and Aya laid bleeding to death. I ran up to her side and did what I could to save her... but it was too late. Before she died though she had asked me to watch over her son Talis. When she did breath her last breath... I had to cut the baby from her to save him... one of the hardest things I ever had to do..."
Ruon perked up a bit. "So that's where he had gotten the nickname Battle Born?" The old lady somberly looked at him. "Yes... those who were born in the midst of battle are called that. It is said that those individuals are born not of their mother's milk... but of their blood. This is supposed to give them a bloodlust and a craving for battle. It is also said that those that are battle born can never hear their zanpaktou, should they ever acquire one. This is what's referred to as spirit deafness." "So that's why Talis never enters shikai or bankai..." Mayari chimed in. "That's correct. Now... let me continue."

Raising the terror...
The old lady Misu wiped away the tears in her eyes and composed herself before continuing. "When I held the child in my hands... I could feel that his power was incredible, prodigious even. I never felt a newborn with such reiryoku before, nor have I since that time. So... I was going to honor his mother's dying wish and raise him as my own grandchild. However before I took him home I walked over and picked up the slain shinigami's zanpaktou... it was he that saved the child and I believed it would be a good memento for Talis to remember his savior by..." She leaned back and looked around the hut, memories coming back of Talis as a baby, then as a toddler, then as a young child. "Oh... he was a little terror. Always getting into things... always jumping and carrying on. He showed early on a knack for acrobatics... doing handstands... jumping over tables and barrels and the like. As he got older, he got increasingly better at it... though he started spending more time outside. He never got along well with others... picking fights with the other kids was common, even after I disciplined him he would take his licks, then go back out as soon as he could to do it all over again. Eventually, when he was 14, he ran away, taking the zanpaktou with him. He had run off..."
"Didn't you go after him? A kid with a zanpaktou is a danger to himself and others around him!" Ruon blurted out suddenly. The old woman peered out of the window again. "No... his destiny was set in place. I had no right to interfere... he needed to learn the hard way... he needed to discover his destiny for himself. It wasn't going to happen in this little hut, no matter how I tried." Mayari spoke up then. "Old reports state that there was a child around that age that was seen wandering around with a sword. These reports get more and more violent as time went on." "Yes... he had a streak of violence in him. He loved to fight... this kind of love for fighting could only be tempered with experience and that was what he was getting. He seemed to kill only out of necessity... fighting others only to the point that they were too injured to continue to fight. And as time went on... the opponents he fought got stronger and stronger. He was always looking for the next big challenge. He learned of his strength... of his abilities and inabilities through these trials. This continued for years... till he decided there was no more challenges worthy of him in the Rukongai."

Among the ranks of the shinigami...
"So it was then he decided to join the academy?" Mayari and Ruon were now deeply intrigued by the story. "All of his instructors said he demonstrated a barbaric but powerful strength and that he was graduated early." "That is correct... it was shortly after he turned 48 that he decided to enter the academy, not to join the shinigami... but to hunt for a worthy opponent. When he did join though, he was disappointed. The other students were enrolled in hopes of becoming stronger. Talis enrolled so he could face someone stronger than himself. The difference between his own power and all of the other students was like comparing a normal vice-captain to the captain-commander. This made him a feared and isolated person. What astonished everyone more so than that was his age... he was the youngest to enroll at the time. For someone so young to possess that much strength... it was unheard of. He naturally impressed his instructors greatly with his prowess in physical combat."
Ruon took out a little booklet from the inside of his attire and opened it up. "Talis scored beyond the charts in all but his Kido classes, which he failed due to outright refusal to participate in the required classes." "Talis didn't need Kido... he viewed it as coward's trickery. He got into alot of trouble over that, to the point where the kido instructor wanted to teach him a lesson the hard way two years into Talis' stay, by using him in a live Kido demonstration. The top student in kido at the time was told to, in front of the class outside in the designated training area, bind Talis with Kido. This student, Arden I believe his name was, was supposed to have been a prodigy with Kido. So... Arden obliged by casting a Hōrin spell upon Talis. The other students laughed at first while they and the instructor looked on at him with smirks on their faces. They were wiped off their face though when Talis began laughing as well, he had begun breaking the bindings with relative ease. That's when the instructor ordered another student to bind him as well with a Hainawa spell. Two binding spells though proved to be insufficient as Talis flared his suppressed reiryoku, using his strength to easily shatter both of the bindings. The flare of energy was felt throughout the academy and beyond, attracting the attention of a few shinigami nearby. Talis then suppressed his reiryoku once more with a smile upon his face. He had not only beaten his kido instructor's attempt at humiliating him, he had also managed to humiliate him and Arden. It was this episode that got him accepted into the shinigami ranks much earlier than the others in his classes."
"He was given the 5th seat of the 11th division... a rare occurrence since that division's waiting period for a seat is usually years." "Talis unknowingly proved himself worthy of that spot at his age. He truly was a prodigious being. If he were able to use shikai and bankai at that time... he could have snagged a vice-captain's rank or even the captain's haori. That was the magnitude of his power at the time." "So... he gotten promoted to 5th seat straight from the academy. What happened after that?" Ruon asked.
"Well Ruon... his first day as the 5th seat of the 11th division was where the story gets interesting!"
